On the Eve of Advent

Luke 21: 34-36
Dn 7:15-27 / Dn 3:82-87

Be vigilant at all times and pray that you have the strength to escape the tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the Son of Man.
(Luke 21:36)

Come let us sing in jubilation To the Rock of our salvation; But for Him let us also prepare

In works of charity and prayer.

Jesus said to his disciples: “Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy from carousing and drunkenness and the anxieties of daily life, and that day catch you by surprise like a trap. For that day will assault everyone who lives on the face of the earth. Be vigilant at all times and pray that you have the strength to escape the tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the Son of Man.”

Reflection

It is again the season of Advent. Christmas will soon be upon us once more, that time of the year dreaded by uncles and aunts who belong to large families, and have innumerable godchildren to give Christmas presents to. Yesterday afternoon, when my wife Ollie and I went to the mall to buy our grandniece a birthday present, we couldn’t believe the huge crowd of people that thronged the department stores and novelty shops for their early Christmas shopping. Of course it was the end of the month, payroll time, but something in the air tells me the economy is in the upswing, and the consumer index is soaring, pushed by overseas workers’ $$$ remittances.

It is during this season of “carousing and drunkenness” that we must step back and reflect on the message of our Lord in today’s Gospel. The circumstances that existed just prior to the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70 were probably very similar to those that we are experiencing today. It was a time of affluence, when people were more concerned with worldly pursuits, and those who were drawn to the faith by the early Church were being severely persecuted. In such a state, apathy and apostasy had become commonplace. So, to be “vigilant at all times… and have the strength to escape the tribulations that are imminent…” let us keep in mind the great tsunami tragedy that shook the world by surprise in December 26, 2004. Just a day after Christmas, those who perished (almost 300,000 people) were on a holiday vacation in the various resorts along the coastal regions of East Asia. Not a care in the world, things of God, death, or destruction were farthest from their minds.

As we prepare for the coming of the Lord, let us temper our celebrations with prayer, meditation of God’s Word, and charity towards the poor, which never fails to make this season more meaningful. These are what will put us in good standing before the Son of Man when we come before Him in judgment.

Father God, on this eve of Advent, please let Your Holy Spirit keep us vigilant and prayerful, well prepared for the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ, for it is during times of celebration that we become complacent and vulnerable to the temptation of the evil one. Help us, Father, to be worthy of His coming. Amen.

Huh?

It horrifies me when I see people who consciously use tricks to conquer other people trusts. These days, you can easily avail several books on  power management, etc and learn how to deceive, cheat and fake in order to be successful in any relationship. It must be sad to think that someone tries to play a psychological war game on you and that your relationship were only based on self interest and deception.

But whats the point of having a bunch of manipulated friends around you, anyway? Nada!

Wedding In The Middle of The Manila Peninsula Siege

Talking of bridal excitement, this bride’s wedding took on a bizarre twist as some military men took siege in Manila Peninsula Hotel on the day of their wedding… When about 30 rebel soldiers stormed through the doors of the Peninsula Hotel in Manila, brandishing weapons and aiming to foment a popular uprising, 30-year-old Maria-Stella Magtayo was preparing for her wedding.

The bride had dressed in her room and entered the lobby in a white gown, bouquet in hand, a friend holding the train. But the chaos she found did not daunt her. «I’m going through with this,» she said, as rebel soldiers with automatic rifles and scores of journalists paced around the lobby. «Rock n’ Roll!»

Her groom, Rian Montano, 31, was still in his shorts and T-shirt because he had not started to get ready. He was wearing hotel slippers. «We were having breakfast when these guys broke in. I knew at once it was something bad,» he said. The wedding as well as the guests who had arrived from around the world were moved to Shangri-La Hotel across the road. The couple and their guests got out of the hotel by a side exit when the rebel soldiers were briefly trying to prevent people from leaving. Montano, an executive at San Miguel Corp, said his guests had 50 rooms booked in the Peninsula. Asked if he was angry at the rebel soldiers, he said, «I have to fix so many things, I have no time to be mad.» References: Daily Gulf News, SMH.com.au

Auctions Thyself for Charity

Wouldn’t you feel better knowing the money you just paid for sex is going to a good cause… other than fulfilling your own naughty cravings?  Wouldn’t you feel better knowing the money you just paid for sex is going to a good cause… other than fulfilling your own naughty cravings?

Maria Carolina, a prostitute in Chile, is auctioning off 27 hours to fulfill the winner’s sexual fantasies. Believe it or not, it’s an annual fun-raising campaign in the conservative Roman Catholic country. Does the fact that it’s for charity justify the act?

Adult prostitution is legal in Chile. Chile’s two-day Teleton fundraiser is endorsed by television stars and aims to raise funds for poor, disabled children. Speaking about Maria Carolina’s unusual donation, campaign organizer Mario Kreutzberger said he would not encourage “immoral” activities, but said he would accept her pledge. “Everyone can do what they want, but if someone tells me that they’ll do something immoral … I’m not going to encourage it,” Kreutzberger, who as “Don Francisco” hosts the long-running “Sabado Gigante” program on the U.S. Spanish-language Univision network, told local media.-news.yahoo

“I’ve already auctioned off the 27 hours of love,” Carolina said, adding she had already raised about $4,000. “One of my clients already paid. It seemed like a good deed to him.”

She’s a pretty one too, I’m sure whoever wins this auction will be feeling pretty darn good!

Ah well,if George Clooney did it for $350,000 why can’t she right?lol

The Manila Peninsula Siege, Trillanes, & The Media

I am breaking my rule once more this time, that is not to discuss any political issues for this blog. But I couldn’t stop myself. So please kindly bear with me, these are just my personal observations and opinions…

Okay, here is my reaction to the Manila Peninsula Siege staged last November 29:

“Oh no! Not again…” I mean, don’t you think that fiasco looks a bit funny? Please don’t call me a cynical or an uncaring Pinay. But for all I care, it looked like another shooting for a tele-novela to me. Both Trillanes and the media (especially ABS-CBN, sorry but its true!) looked like they loved the drama of it all. Please Media, stick to your journalism ethics and lessen the drama. This is not Maala-ala Mo Kaya! Get both sides not only that of Trillanes, we wanted to hear the side of our soldiers too. And yes, please do not meddle in military operations. Have respect for the authority. If they say get out because you are in the way, then follow instructions. Pinky Webb was acting as if she was perfectly right in being angry about being shoved away. Hey, if you were doing your job, they were doing their job too! The media were crying » kawawa naman kami we were hogtied and treated like animals!» But hey, di nyo ba naisip baka may mali din kayo? That is why I hated watching the news these days…

The assault was an overkill! Everybody agrees to that. I mean why bring a tank to Manila Pen? Helloooo! A SWAT team or a special operations team is supposed to take care of an urban assault especially if a lot of civilians might get caught in the crossfire. Does that happen only in the movies? Tsk.Tsk.Tsk… Who is the bright boy behind the idea? There were only this much number of people to be captured but a battalion was probably sent to capture them. Then there was tear gas. Even if the media were taken hostages (which they were not), was it necessary to bring a tank? By bringing a tank, were you planning to fire all those people and Manila Pen to smithereens? Hahahaha…All I can say is that I pity the door of Manila Pen. As the APC battered its way through the door, I could not stop myself from saying Ouch! Ouch! Ouch! But who’s going to pay for the damages?

We (the common folks) suspect Trillanes might have support or else he wouldn’t have the nerve to do what he did that day. Either his support were blocked, or they were just waiting in the sidelines watching if he is going to be successful before coming in to help. Trillanes, Sir, be careful on whom to trust next time…

See this?

I still have three of these WordPress t-shirts, left over from the 1st Mindanao Bloggers Summit. My colleagues in The Usual Suspects are going to whip up another online contest to raffle off these collectibles. Watch out for it! I’ll announce it right here soon.

Thing is, they’re all women’s tees, size small, so maybe the contest’s gonna be limited to girls. Well, including bloggers’ girlfriends.

Thanks to Matt and Maya for the t-shirts!!!

2. Reading F. Sionil Jose’s Po-on, the first of the Rosales novels.

3. American Gods. My first Neil Gaiman.

Davao IT: ready for Japan?

Soon after the opening of the PhilNITS branch in Davao City, there has been positive movement within the Japanese I.T. community in the Philippines. Where before they have only paid lip service to initiatives in promoting Davao I.T. to the Japanese market, now these entities (private and government) are in fact looking towards the South as a viable investment and outsourcing destination. But more so, as a source of I.T. manpower.

PhilNITS is engaged in the development of high-tech skills. Japan is in dire need of highly-skilled skilled personnel. Hence the bullish outlook of Davao City as an I.T. center by Japanese companies and government agenices. But we must not be overly optimistic.

This renewed industrial interest in Davao City (dormant ever since the heyday of abaca plantations) is not necessarily driven by the presence of a robust I.T. industry here. It is fueled rather by Japan’s own requirements. According to the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), their country is in need of 150,000 I.T. engineers annually. The inability to address this has finally allowed Asian countries with strong I.T. industries to receive offshore projects from Japan, especially China, India and Vietnam. It was published in a report that the Philippines receives less than half of what Vietnam gets in terms of outsourced projects for software development and animation. (more…)

Hopes And Dreams

Our dream…

Two years ago, I wrote about our purchased housing lot in Villa de Mercedes, in Catigan,Toril, Davao City. The place is supposed to be our Refugium or the place where we want to retire later. We consider ourselves lucky to have acquired the lot as Euro exchange rate was still high. To date, the price per square meter has doubled and may double again.

Hopes…dying!

The economy here in Germany is getting worst. Everything is getting expensive and everything is increasing its price, and jobs are paid lower and lower every year. And taxes getting higher and insurance premiums going up. Summa summarum (altogether) what’s left is only enough to pay the bills and for food and further than that…no more. At the end of the month, there’s absolutely nothing left to save for rainy days or for retirement. This is the reason why I said “hopes dying” because I see no financial improvement in the future. It’s a nightmare! Like last year, they decided to increase VAT from 16 to 19% and it started this year. Para pantakip daw ito sa gaping hole ng Staatskasse (treasury). They were successful indeed…they got more than 3 billions surplus just within 10 months.

Oh before I forget, the government advised the younger citizens to get an additional private pension fund aside from the public retirement insurance. They said that the staatliche Rente (public or state pension) (we are paying for this monthly) will be insufficient in the future. Great huh? From hand to mouth na nga lang ang net income mo dahil sa dinadami nang social security contributions deductions. Tapos at the end wala ka rin palang makukuha doon sa binabayaran mo pagdating ng panahon. How inspiring and reassuring. Tongue-in-cheek!

Mahirap i-explain pero I hope you get the message (hehehe).

Goodbye Deutschland!

More than 100,000 Germans emigrate annually, and it’s only the beginning…

vanes

i miss sitting on a grassy field to wait for the sun to set, listening to the ground sigh with the last rays of sunshine. i miss the feeling of the dry twilight breeze murmuring soft scents of the day that’s about to end. i long for the sight of those hearts whose wings flutter over the wind’s promise of nightly peace.but i had to close my eyes, or else i would see the source of that distinct laughter; moments are ruined when certain truths forcefully enter your consciousness, like the right choices that aren’t real.the wind should be blowing steadily stronger by now, forcing the the heart-shaped tips of those wind vanes that we place on our rooftops to point to one another, seldom at each other. yet those arrows still point at those directions even after the wind has long died down.

i want to let go of verses, like one flies kites. i want to let them fly against the mad dictates of the wind.
